Hunters Point Shipyard

PHASE II

The next phase of development is underway. A conceptual plan for the dual development of Candlestick Point and the Hunters Point Shipyard has been approved by several city agencies and is progressing through the environmental review process.

The vision for the two waterfront neighborhoods features environmental sustainability, a mix of market-rate and low-income housing, retail and entertainment opportunities, a new stadium for the 49ers and new job-producing commercial office space.

New neighborhoods will be built around an extensive shoreline park and trail system that combines the best features of Crissy Field and Golden Gate Park. Pedestrian walkways will open up the city’s southeast waterfront, providing direct access for residents and visitors to recreational and natural areas.

The use of public transit or alternative forms of transportation is emphasized, reducing automobile dependence. Compact, walkable neighborhoods will encourage interaction among residents. Progressive energy solutions are being explored to better utilize natural resources.

The Alice Griffith public housing project will be completely rebuilt without dislocating current residents as part of the plan. New housing will be built alongside the existing site. Once new housing is built, the current site will be demolished and additional housing built.

The plan also seeks to help accelerate the environmental cleanup of the Hunters Point Shipyard to the standards set by the City of San Francisco, State of California and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The environmental review process began in June of 2007 and is expected to be completed by early 2009.
