SAN FRANCISCO - A Bayview-based pipeline company has been awarded an $18 million contract related to the redevelopment of the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. More than $10 million of the contract awarded to Ranger Pipelines is expected to go to minority owned or local subcontractors. With this contract, Lennar will have invested more than $20 million to such businesses in the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood for Phase I of the development. The hiring of Ranger is consistent with Lennar's commitment to providing maximum community benefit in completing this project.
"We are excited about this new partnership and look forward to continuing to hire local contractors for work on the Shipyard," said Kofi Bonner, President of Lennar's Bay Area Urban Division. "We have made good progress hiring local companies and we are striving to provide opportunities for additional local residents employed in later stages of Phase I."
"We are pleased with the response from the local contractors in the community and are happy to provide them an opportunity to perform construction-support services for the Infrastructure stage of the Shipyard redevelopment project," said Mr. Bonner. "One of our highest priorities is a commitment to giving back to the community. This partnership will provide great experience and job opportunities for local contractors that may not have worked on previous projects of such a large scale."
Under the terms of the contract, Ranger will be required to subcontract 31 percent of the work to minority owned businesses, 20 percent to local firms and 10 percent to businesses owned by women. At least 50 workers are expected to be employed for the infrastructure work within the BVHP impact area 94124 zip code. Contracts like the one awarded to Ranger are helping to create economic opportunities for area residents to get good-paying jobs and to improve the skills needed to succeed now and in the future.
In business for more than 20 years, Ranger specializes in the construction of water pipelines and other underground utilities. The scope of this contract with Lennar will focus on the development of sewer, water and irrigation systems, as well as roadways and sidewalks. Lennar partnered with the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, the Hunters Point Shipyard Citizens Advisory Committee and other community leaders in selecting Ranger.
Lennar is building 1,600 residential homes on Parcel A of the Shipyard, 30 percent of which will be affordable housing. Of the total 66 acres, 25 acres have been set aside for various parks and open space uses, and 10,000 square feet of neighborhood-serving retail.
